anthropic-copyright-authors-settlement
It was an interesting case. The court ruled that Anthropic didn't violate copyright by training its Chatbot on the books, but it DID violate copyright by downloading said books from a pirate site. In other words if they had bought the books to start with, they could have used them to train their chatbot Claude.
So they are paying $3000 per book that they could have bought a $20 copy of and been in the clear.
Wow.
