Anime

Interestingly it seems to getting better, maybe because the more and more perfected integration of CGI. Dan Da Dan or Jujutsu Kaisen would come to my mind. Like somebody said (I think it was about Dan Da Dan): Damn, this fight had more frames than the whole season 4 of Seven Deadly Sins. Even with lower tier productions the quality seems to get better and better.

People are bitching about 3D animations in Anime (Ok, some of those CGI dragons really are terrible) but today people already have forgotten about the limitation of traditional animations. No pitch, no yaw for instance. CGI made formerly impossible things possible. When I first saw good CGI integration in Anime I was blown away.

Actually, even for today’s standards this still is damn good.

The examples I was talking about earlier:
Goofy nonsense:

Then the very next episode:

I would've posted these then but I desperately needed to sleep. Also I've always been a supporter of using CG in Anime, but I prefer hand drawn. I think the techniques for animation have gotten significantly better, but I am biased and prefer 90's/early 2000's stuff mostly for the art style and the coloration.

I also love the old, traditional style which, perhaps, peaked with the work of Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke…..) or the original Ghost in the shell.

Agreed, I think Studio Ghibli, especially spirited away has the most beautiful animation to this day. 95 Ghost In The Shell is also really good. Akira deserves a mention as well.

Heavy Metal 1981
A classic and the proof that, a long time ago, the west was leading in artistic creativity and boldness. Wonder what happened.

Saw that movie the first time 1982 in a US cinema. Never would have thought that cartoons could be not only brutal but even scary.

To add, Heavy Metal was a milestone in a lot of aspects. They used a lot of techniques never used in animations before they also developed new techniques. As far as I have read this short sequence was the most expensive, time consuming and stressful of the whole move. Today it would be nothing special but 1981 it was something never seen before.

Thinking about the Heavy Metal movie and magazine, Métal Hurlant or Epic, artists like Mœbius, Bilal or Corben… What the fuck happened? How could we drop that ball and leave that whole thing to the Japanese?

And some more:

And the soundtrack is top notch.
I never considered Heavy Metal to be "anime". I have a Taarna character I put together in Daz Studio.taarna_wip2.jpg

The costume was a Poser (Victoria 4 base) creation I think by Terry MCG (spelling?). The boots didn't port over very well so I ended up just exporting the left and right as obj meshes then importing them into Daz and parenting/scaling/positioning them. I didn't really need the costume as the primary rendering I did has her naked in the stretch rack whip scene recreation.

Doujin Works

A kind of on topic Anime. Short episodes about amateur and semi-pro artists and their sometimes saucy comics. The main character gets introduced into the world of doujin by her friend who loves to draw rape comics.

Redo of Healer

From Wikipedia:
“Keyaru, who is exploited and sexually abused repeatedly by others due to being a healing magician, notices what lays just beyond his healing magic, and is convinced that a healing magician is the strongest class in the world. However, by the time he realizes his own potential, he is already deprived of everything. Thus, using his healing magic, enhanced by the magic-enhancing properties of the Philosopher's Stone on the world itself, he goes back four years into the past, deciding to redo everything and get revenge on the ones who abused him and take down a corrupted empire. “

To put it more directly: He kills all the heroes who abused and raped him, kills the sadistic maids of one of the princesses who drugged and humiliated him and makes the princess his sex slave and then he rapes and kills the other princesses.

From Wikipedia:
“In Anime News Network's Winter 2021 Preview Guide, the series was panned by most of the reviewers for its recurring "rape and revenge". The reviewers criticized the series for having a "generic" fantasy role-playing game inspired setting similar to popular isekai series and for "contrived" in-story justifications for its revenge plot. The series garnered controversy, particularly due to its depiction of extreme violence, gratuitous amounts of sexual content, rape and slavery, most elements often being used as a plot device, especially in the first two episodes.”

I disagree. The violence surly was not the problem. There are piles of anime that are significant more violent and bloody than Redo, still nobody complains about those. The problem simply was the combination of violence and sex. And, as everybody knows, sex is much worse than even the most blood splattering mayhem.

On a funny side note (also from Wikipedia):
Since its airing, the anime adaptation of Redo of Healer gained higher than average percentage of female viewers and Tsukiyo expressed their surprise on Twitter.

Guess the chances for a season 2 are more or less zero now. I am sure with reversed genders, a young girl gets abused and raped and now takes revenge there would have been less trouble.

A funny scene from “Jobless Reincarnation” I can watch over and over again.

But, some of the discussions about this scene made me think. A lot of people seemed to be triggered to insist that, even without magic, he would have won this fight because he is a boy.

Seriously? Prepubescent kids, she is two years older, significant taller, heavier and, thanks to her daily sword fighting, stronger than him (he as a magician is no fan of physical training). Still, you really think he would have won just because he is a boy?

Now imagine the same scene with swapped genders. Would it be still as funny?
