Love Love LOVE This Filmmaker's Testimonial!

I think AI is going to be really useful for quickly and cheaply prototyping things, and I expect it will have a place in film making just like CGI does. I haven't seen anything yet though that convinces me you can make a full length film with it. Commercials, which have always been the realm of slop, yeah, that avenue is going dry up.

Nice. Yea, moviemaking and game making is really what can benefit the most from AI, well at least when it comes to creative folks being able to do things. Drawing and writing doesn't take THAT much time and a single person can make an entire project. Photography requires more, but one can still substitute a lot with photoshop, miniatures and trickery.

But when it comes to making movies or (larger) games, you start needing teams of people, tons of time and other things really quickly. You can have an idea for the next Star Wars or whatever, but just no chance to make it.

Obviously the funny thing is, that since so many people will have the ability to make movies and other projects that were impossible before, who will have the time to watch them? Already there's so much stuff coming out, there's no chance to even keep up, never mind actually watch, play, read and follow even a tiny fraction of it. There's only 24 hours in a day. I basically watch nothing but YT and yet my "watch later" playlist keeps growing.

No wonder people mostly watch shorts. Who has time for 20+ min videos these days, never mind full movies? Movie makers hasn't adapted to this, and keep making 2 hours and longer movies when the story is shit anyway and could be squeezed into half an hour at most. But a classic studio can't produce a half an hour movie because reasons.

I foresee that eventually AI will just learn to make fully customised content from scratch, or just from some basic input from the user. Kinda like today it can write a poem just from a prompt. So everyone will basically watch "their own" movies and play their own games, cyberpunk/neuromancer style. Nobody will have time to watch other people's movies, and what for anyway? Since my AI can do the same for me. Now sure, sharing something you've made or experienced is a very natural instinct, but hey you have an AI companion too, that is right there to share and cuddle with.

Btw it still creeps me how current generation of video gen over-emotes faces. A bit uncanny valley.

Not entirely on the original topic but Tailswin brought up "So everyone will basically watch "their own" movies and play their own games, cyberpunk/neuromancer style."

Bo Burnham reacting to his own video, then reacting to his reaction to his own video, then reacting to his reacting to his...

Nah, AI is never going to replace the artists ;)

The reason for that is probably classic studios are still stuck in the time when people traveled to movie theaters to watch movies, and nobody is going to do that for a half hour movie.

But they are going to have to scale stuff back, because the age when people are going to go to movie theaters is probably close to over, aside from "dating" there really isn't any reason for it - we all have better equipment at home and no gum under the seats.

There still are a good number of people going to theaters though, and as long as that is happening studios are going to turn out 2 hour movies

And I'm proud to count myself among them. As long as there's a theater near me, I'll never tire of the experience, the atmosphere, or the aroma and taste of overpriced popcorn with extra layered butter.
I hate it. The chairs may be fairly comfy these days, but I just can't sit in one position for several hours. I get antsy after 15 minutes, and then I can't concentrate, I need to switch to doing something else. But what, with all the people in the dark around you? Either way, the movie is probably done for me by that point and it's just torture. And the other stuff... I need to pee, or I missed something and need to pause or rewind. Well tough shit. Consume the whole thing and don't think.

The only time it's worth for me to go see a movie is if I've already seen it, like it, and I want to see it on the big screen. But obviously, that's not how it works because yea, movie studios still want to sell the "event" of watching a movie like it's the fucking 1930's.

And what's with the sound? Every theatre is so ridiculously loud, that just has to be against health regulations. I always carry military earplugs with me, and pretty much the only times I've ever used them has been in cinemas. Literal fucking warzone ear protection in order to see a movie.

And all that just to see some generic dreck that's a 16th sequel of a 4th remake version but dumbed down so hard that it's on par of something I would have written when I was 7, despite having a $gazillion budget with 5000 slaves exploited people employed. Of course that's how it ends up, since the only real reason for that film to exist in the first place, is most likely to generate a fake half a billion loss in order to vacuum up all the tax rebates. Yay industry!
