Why Discord?

And in general, why do we insist on working for Corporate Social Sites for free, putting up with their stealing of our personal information, and have them shape our views? And I am including FaceSuck, Instacrap, X-Twatter, TakTooK, etc.

Why do we insist on being lemmings?

Not to pick on DeadlyDesires because I like the place, but why the fuck do they even need a Discord Channel? Wouldn't they be better served by having that activity on their own board?

How many times does Meta have to sell your data before you get the hint that YOU are the commodity they are selling?

Leaving out the Cyberpunk aspects of it, we are here, now. This isn't in the future. Why are we putting up with it?

In my experience discord is used to hide things from the public since it is invite only in many instances. I belong to about 22 discord channels and i hate going there. There is a popular VR game that uses the DAZ models in it and they invited me to their discord. I got there and there were several threads all about illegally sharing DAZ assets for the game and I called them out on it and also invited DAZ to the discord. Unfortunately it's still going on, but near as bad as it was. For the same community there are a ton of wannabe creators that use patreon and many of them have discords doing the exact same thing, sharing illegal items. I managed to get a couple of them banned from the game for it, but it's gotten so bad, I am done with it since it seems all I do it report stolen items instead of enjoying the game.

I assume discord is easier than setting up a forum, which is why it's popular

The irony is that, in DD's case, the forum came first.

Personally, I'm not entirely sure what the point of their Discord channel is beyond having an insta-chat version of the board. I've never been a particularly big fan of Discord's UI, and DeadlyDesire's decision to create a near mirror-copy of the forum layout using Discord channels only made navigating their server that much worse. I briefly joined just to see if Discord would run me through their new age verification process. Comically, it didn't, and I left DD's server yesterday.

At present, the only server I'm still on is PKF's. That's where most of their client interaction is, and where @JohnM keeps everyone abreast of new developments in AI as he continues experimenting with it himself.

But there again PKF HAS a forum, and they are killing interaction there with the Discord channel, and my question again is why are they doing it? Forums have pretty much instantaneous feedback if people just post there, is having a little notification come up really that important? I find it a pain in the ass.

If memory serves, their clients kept asking for a Discord server. Its popularity stems from its origins as a multiplayer voice chat system for gamers that just "worked". It also integrates well with streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch.

Message boards are still useful for long, in-depth discussions and content organizations, Discord's popularity grew thanks in large part to the inherently private nature of the platform and its real-time chat functions.

I find it a pain in the ass.
So do I, which is why PKF is the only server I'm on, and I would discourage you from setting one up. I never created one for VoD because I didn't want the hassle of managing two separate platforms.

But of course forums can be private, and most of the adult ones are. Hell, you can't even get on most of them without an invite. Yeah, people keep insisting on flocking to the very places that are sheering the flocks.

Discord, to it's credit, is one of the rare ones that is still private and is chiefly being run by individuals rather than corporations. Here's the breakdown:

Who Owns Discord?

Notably the guy turned down a $10 billion dollar offer from Microsoft to buy it. Kudos to him.

Discord started as VoIP, basically a live chat mode for video games. The one thing these forums can't do is VoIP, so if that's what you need, discord is the place. Setting up a forum there though when you already have one? WTF?

Some admins like to offer users more options? :: shrug ::

Both DD and PKF even use their forum software's own live chat plugin, but apparently the plugin wasn't sufficient to meet the demand for real-time chat.
Honestly the "live chat" plugins on those boards suck, my question though is why there needs to be live chat at all. Are our response times on this thread really that slow?

Yeah, if we aren't on, the thread languishes. So does chat, it's a function of how many people are on it.

That and chat suffers the same issues as X-Twitter in it's early days, responses are really short and shallow. I don't know about you, but all I can do in 80 characters or less is make wise cracks... with emoticons 👯‍♂️

Role-players wanted it, and Discord offers the allure of letting you know when someone's typing.
....... ;)

Yeah, OK, I understand, the instant messaging on my phone does that also. But Christ we're all getting to be neurotic little shits. So we stare at the screen waiting for the text to arrive instead of getting on doing something useful. Like starting a render.
