I tend to ramble a bit (“no kidding!”, the members all scream as one), usually for humorous effect, which is why my comics tend to be 200+ pages long.
I am also, to use a polite term, “older than dirt”, which I can remember banging rocks together until they crumbled to get.
Anyway, back in the old days, and I mean the really old days, the laws on selling cigarettes were much laxer. A kid would come up to the counter wiping their snotty nose, plunk down a pack of Camel non-filtered, and tell you they were for his dad. And if you knew his dad, and that was his brand, you would sell the kid the cigarettes.
In fact, in those days they sold cigarettes out of vending machines that had a neat little sticker on them which said: “Minors are forbidden to use this machine”. Little Johnny, of course being illiterate, plunked his 50 cents right in and walked away with a pack of Marlboro Reds and a booklet of matches in his grubby little hands.
We aren’t in those days anymore.
And we aren’t in the days where you could “Certify” you were over 18 by clicking on a box and gain access to Adult content.
That is probably a good thing, just like not selling cigarettes to minors.
There are two problems with establishing age on the Internet, the bigger one is government has gotten into the act, and proposed a bunch of solutions that don’t work because of the other problem – there is no way to establish age on the Internet with certainty.
Which brings up things like Discord making you look into your camera so their AI can try to figure out how old you are to gain access to an adult discussion board.
Or various commercial enterprises that charge a site owner money to perform some voodoo routine that usually consists of major privacy violations that don’t prove anything either.
So here’s my stand: I don’t want minors to view adult content.
When you arrived here you clicked that little box that certified you were an adult.
To get access to the adult materials I need to be confident that you are over 18. Note, I didn’t say you have to prove it to me, since that’s impossible, I just want to establish enough about you to meet that criteria.
Now if you are coming here from another adult site, and have any kind of history with them, I’m pretty confident you are over 18, even if you weren’t when you hit that site because, even on the Internet time doesn’t stand still, and if you have say a five year history on the Internet, you’re obviously over 18.
If you are using an email provider that no young person has ever heard about that’s usually a pretty good indication.
And how you respond to questions works too.
So I don’t need to know how old you are, or who you are, or what credit cards you have, or any of the other stupid stuff that’s being done, I just need to be confident that the person I am letting into the Adult section is mature enough to be there.
If you are coming here from another adult site and I can cross reference the User ID that’s good enough.
If you aren’t we chat, I will send you a DM asking if you even want adult access and if so start the conversation to establish adulthood.
And I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
